We began as an official girls’ youth group of the Michigan State Council Knights of Columbus.  Recently, we have made moved to be a parish sponsored organization at Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland, Mi. We retain a very similar purpose.

Our group was formed to teach young ladies how to run a business meeting. We believe that when you participate in regular meetings, you gain important life skills, including:

  • How to follow rules

  • How to listen to others in a courteous manner and respect others’ opinions and ideas

  • The art of discussion and compromise

  • Gaining self-confidence in public speaking, and

  • With that self-confidence, a young lady can carry what she learns in Daughters in the Light of Mary back to her school, perhaps becoming active in student government and other school-oriented clubs

Daughters in the Light of Mary is also a SERVICE organization. Our members serve their circle, their church, and their community. And, again, by participating in those entities, the young ladies are learning:

  • To organize their time and talents

  • The importance of making commitments and, most importantly, following through with them

  • To learn how to take responsibility for their actions and words

  • To use and expand their creativity, thinking of new ideas and projects

  • The importance of charity and helping others, and they learn that they will be better persons for putting others’ needs before their own needs

  • They learn that they are part of a whole; that there are others who depend on them and others who they can depend on

Our young people feel a need to seek truth and clear the confusion; to  belong somewhere with like-minded people.  It vitally important for our church to provide opportunities and spaces where the lives of today’s young women can bring lessons in leadership and service back to their homes, schools, and into every aspect of their lives.  Daughters in the Light of Mary is an avenue to provide those fundamentals in the lives of our members.
